the most wonderful time of the year

January 3, 2018

well, jovie went back to school today, after having had 3 mondays off!

it was a super break, we all agree.  i know i have said in years past how lazy we had been, and this year it seemed to get even more lazy, cozy, snuggly.  it’s a normal cold time of year (thankfully not like last year!  we played cornhole, and come to find out- it was record breaking for being warm).  BITTER cold (for us, anyway).  so i’m not joking when i say i have left the neighborhood all of 5 times in the last 3 weeks.

The Mr. has enjoyed a leisurely vacation as well.

my christmas presents have been a hit with the whole family.  The Mr. outdid himself this year.  because he wanted one, he got me a little computer that has all the retro video games on it, so we have enjoyed that a lot on these cold days.  add to that, he got me the dice game QWIXX and we all are loving that easy quick game!  plus, Santa gave jovie Pass the Pigs.  games galore!!

we had a really nice visit from gramma & grampa.  we hung out, baked, cooked, ate, watched football, pretended, read, played on devices & had christmas.

jovie was happy with her gifts.  a woodzee camper from santa, a pillow from her cousins in arizona & a $100 bill from santa to buy an american girl doll were some of the hits.  not to mention a full-sized bookshelf from us & plenty of books from everyone to go along with it.

it’s definitely hard to get back in the swing of things, but we’re managing!

hope you have a fabulous 2018!!

a great november

November 29, 2017

as it is still november, i am pleased to be posting things in the present tense!

i was going to just make this a thanksgiving post, then i saw a few other pictures that deserved some (mild) attention.

i do hope my few readers had a nice holiday.  (half of you spent it with us!)

we had a very nice thanksgiving with gramma & grampa.  and this year was noteworthy in that it was the first time in 21 thanksgivings shared with The Mr. that we did not travel.  and not only did we not travel, i believe the first time i left the house since the monday before thanksgiving was to have lunch at the indian restaurant on friday! (because some traditions do not need breaking!)  then we didn’t leave again until a small local hike on sunday.

The Mr. had been in Australia prior to the week’s vacation, so the g’s were gracious enough to come here to celebrate so he didn’t turn around a couple days later and sit in traffic.  unfortunately, that meant they faced traffic, but they got here in plenty of time to enjoy chicken paprikas!

jovie handled the australia trip pretty well, and having had a busy week ourselves while he was gone, we spent the day sunday waiting for him to come home cleaning jovie’s room for several hours.  HOURS.  i worked the whole long day and felt no remorse when dinner consisted of a grilled cheese sandwich and tots!  (The Mr. had had some fancy food in first class, so don’t feel terrible for him, either)

recycling and trash from the hours of cleaning

i had hinted and begged at The Mr. for us to have a firepit during the week.  We were too cozy, lazy & full to even do that.  We did manage a few games of cornhole in the week, though.  and we lit an inside fire instead.

i was overly pleased at the absolute perfect autumn weather we got.  & we were delighted to cook 2 lavish meals in our updated kitchen.  time was spent catching up, playing with jovie, snuggling with cats, cooking, cleaning, eating, & watching some absolutely terrific football games.  (tho’ sadly the lions lost, those friday games were nailbiters!  and of course- saturday games were equally awesome!  —i hope clemson plays equally clean and smart this coming saturday as well!)

what the what?  i missed “bring your duck to clemson day, apparently”

a fun november makes me look forward to an equally great december!…

eventful things

September 13, 2017

so 4th grade (!!) has turned out to be pretty eventful, so far.  we are currently home from school for the 3rd day due to hurricane Irma.  i feel overwhelmed how lucky we were, and i truly cannot imagine having been in the thick of it.  jovie’s aunt LJ (and fam) were down in one of the hardest hit areas of FL. [they’re ok!] and to think how throttled the caribbean islands got.  it’s awfully devastating and i keep reminding jovie how grateful she can feel.

we lost power for only 5 hours. some of our local schools are still without, thus the 3rd day at home. The Mr. left early monday morning, before Irma spent the day soaking us with rain & blowing some wind.  jovie and i made the most of the day with videos & game playing.  we played games with a lantern for part of the evening.  i cannot even fathom what millions of others were facing.  my thoughts go out to everyone affected by both of these massive & scary storms just in the past month!!  plus earthquakes, tsunamis, fires & floods elsewhere.   tragic!!

another eventful thing was the solar eclipse!  i originally had planned on jetting to greenville to see 100% totality.  but since we were in the 96% zone, lots of things added up where it just didn’t make sense afterall.  they extended the school day, because it all occurred when dismissal would have happened.  however, i brought jovie home early and the 2 of us sat in the backyard and ooh-ed & aahh-ed by ourselves.  The Mr. got to watch the very start with us before he had to go to jury duty.  luckily he got to witness the “full” thing when they took a break and went into the parking lot.  it is quite surprising how dark 4% must be.  it *did* look like dusk. but we were surprised it wasn’t a tad darker.  still pretty flippin awesome, though.

(thanks to the lady on the tv who suggested a colander for a pinhole viewer since the one jovie made at school i couldn’t get to work at all!)  of course. all this waiting for an eclipse- ya gotta read!!

meanwhile, jovie auditioned for – and made!- chorus & we have NEVER seen her so giddy/excited/proud.  they only had slots for 60 kids and there is a waiting list.  we’ve only been a few weeks (canceled this week b/c of Irma) and she’s really enjoying it!

she is totally enjoying and getting more confident in horseback riding!  she wants to sign up for the next session.

she is no longer a ballerina.  she was super observant & mature about that decision and realized that Modern may be more suited for her.

so, we have been keeping busy.  she has realized that 4th grade (!!) is so…. BIG.  she has 2 teachers now.  new responsibilities.  giant class of kids.  and so far things are going well.

so, on to autumn & all the fun that brings.  (the one good thing about Irma was the cold weather she brought the past several days!!)

may the fourth be with her

August 7, 2017

so, this happened:

what you can’t really tell in these pictures is how OLD she looks in this very sparkly dress (with a belt!)

she went to school with these smiles.  we hope she returns with them as well.  this is the first time ever she hasn’t been thrilled with going back to school…   she is not in class with her BFF and they will be changing classes.  BIG STUFF over here.

nine is fine

July 13, 2017

so another terrific birthday weekend was had.  just like last year, jovie wanted to bring a friend to do something special.  this year she decided to bring her school best friend, Serenity, to Build a Bear.  both of the girls love snuggly friends, so this was a great choice.  a bunny named Caramel was Serenity’s choice.  and Jovie chose a kitty of all of her favorite colors named Sugar Cookie.  The girls enjoyed the store and all the stuff to choose from.

afterwards, we went to the Cheesecake Factory for lunch.  it was unfortunate that nobody loved the food as much as we had hoped. even the birthday girl didn’t like their extra-saucy mac n cheese.  it was all OK but not near as good as last year’s lunch at the American Girl Bistro.  also, none of us got any cheesecake.  other desserts were chosen (and HUGE).

we came home & jovie just enjoyed reading and spending time with her new snuggly.

sunday greeted us with a NINE YEAR OLD.  she woke up and we got some good snuggles.  she couldn’t wait to open presents and must have asked about that 1000 times before breakfast of a spinach ham scramble and cinnamon rolls.  luckily for her 2 of her gifts were open in the morning.  one was a certificate for her to pick out a new scooter.  the 2nd told her what the day was going to be filled with.  we were lucky that yet again, the local theatre had a production on her bday.  and last year, mary poppins was perfect.  this year, we got to see Beauty & the Beast which is also one of her favorites!

the show was at 3 so by the time we cleaned up from breakfast, came back from scooter shopping and having appetizer lunch, we decided to let her open all of her gifts.  we knew we would be gone the rest of the night & wanted her to have time to enjoy some more books & shopkin toys.  she was delighted with a craft set she had asked for, saw that it came in the mail, then plum forgot all about.  after recently reading in a book mentioning a magnetic poetry set, she was excited to get her very own.  (the HAPPINESS set includes lots of happy & calm words.  like rainbow, flower, bluebird, blue sky, dream…. oh and also martini.  ????

we all enjoyed the performance (seriously! a GREAT THEATRE) and then a huge hibachi dinner where we were all SO. FULL.  no worries. we were able to come home & have cake (strawberry again) and then just slip into a food coma.  she sat on her beanbag chair and read books.  The Mr. fell asleep on the couch.

a busy weekend was capped off with everyone going to bed at NINE o’clock.

the first pic is of her talking to gramma & grampa.  we were lucky enough that they could spend a fun july4th with us again and enjoy a little bit of birthday time with us early.  jovie was thrilled not only with the books, but the gift card to buy even MORE books.  plus a wonderful keepsake of their time together at Lion King.

we also all got a kick out of -after not hearing that song in well over a year- that as soon as we got in the car after the performance, Rachel Platten’s Better Place was on! PERFECT

summer is upon us

June 14, 2017

summer has begun & it has already been a blast!

we have already been having a lot of fun.  this is what jovie’s been up to in the past 2 1/2 weeks since school let out:

  • performing in her ballet recital.
  • enjoying some gramma & grampa time for that recital/memorial day weekend
  • playdates with 5 different friends
  • a surprise “adventure” to Ocmulgee National Monument
  • which was also an overnight with The Mr. because he was nearby on a project.  the one-day turnaround lent itself very well to this surprise (which jovie was mad about, btw.  she hates surprises!)
  • some mommy-school.  she is learning cursive this summer (don’t get me started!)
  • enjoying The Mr.’s birthday…
  • …with a sitter so we could go to an amazing magician that evening.  (if you’re ever in ATL i have a place for you to go!)
  • a trip to greenville to see gramma & grampa again.
  • swimming in their big (community) pool with The Mr.
  • having a special time with gramma & grampa because they took her to see a performance of Lion King!  she had a great time!
  • began an Art Camp this week.

this has definitely been a great start to what will be a great summer!
